OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Calls for Users to Ease Up on Ghibli-Style Images Amid Team Overwhelm

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly asked users to slow down their requests for Studio Ghibli-style images, citing the overwhelming demand that's putting a strain on his team. The recent update to OpenAI's ChatGPT-4O model has unlocked new capabilities, allowing it to generate more nuanced and detailed images directly from text prompts, a feature that has flooded the internet with Ghibli-inspired visuals.

Previously, the chatbot relied on external models like DALL-E 3 for image generation. With the new update, ChatGPT can now create images using the same large language model (LLM) that handles all other text queries. This integration enables the model to better understand user requests and generate images accordingly, drawing from its vast text knowledge base.

The demand for this service has been overwhelming for the OpenAI team. Altman humorously pleaded, "Can you ease up on the image generation? It's driving our team crazy and they need some sleep."

Altman emphasized the strain on his team, stating, "We just can't keep up. Since the launch, we've been struggling to meet the demand, and it's been tough on the team trying to keep the service running. I've never seen anything like this," he responded to another post on the X platform.

Some enthusiasts suggested replacing the current team with a more agile one to alleviate the pressure. However, Altman defended his team, describing them as "the best in the world, and it's hard." He added, "No, thanks. Besides building AGI, this team is on track to build the world's biggest website from a cold start just 2.33 years ago."

The trend of generating Ghibli-style images has been particularly popular since the new ChatGPT update, with users flooding social media with these creations. Altman, while excited about the trend, admitted that this isn't the first time he's felt overwhelmed by the demand for ChatGPT's native image generation feature, which has put significant pressure on OpenAI's resources.

Earlier, Altman announced restrictions on image generation for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, stating that the GPUs were "melting." OpenAI initially rolled out the native image generation update to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, but now free users can also access the service and "devour" its images.

Following the Studio Ghibli trend, ChatGPT can now create a variety of other images, including comics, posters, presentations, and infographics.

Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation film studio founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, is renowned for its hand-drawn animations and rich storytelling. The studio has produced several films, with notable works including "My Neighbor Totoro," "Spirited Away," "Howl's Moving Castle," "Kiki's Delivery Service," and "Princess Mononoke." According to Mint, the studio's films are celebrated for their dreamy landscapes, soft color palettes, and profound human stories. Additionally, the labor-intensive, hand-drawn approach of Ghibli's animators has long been considered the gold standard in traditional animation.
